The “alternative media” have now become targets for acquisitions by larger media groups with US sites leading the way in this trend, with the Huffington Post receiving $25 million in a recent placing with private equity firms. TMZ.com the US gossip site was recently valued at $100 million, owned by Time Warner. The editor of gigwise.com Jason Gregory said:
“At a time when the future remains uncertain for print publications and how they choose to adapt to the changing media landscape, it’s also encouraging to see an online publication like Gigwise continuing to rise up the ranks. This is my fourth year at the company and with big plans for 2011, it feels like the best is still to come.”
“Our users have come to rely on us for around-the-clock coverage of both mainstream and rising artists, and it’s a testament to the whole team that this has now been reflected in Comscore’s results.”
